About

A Long-tailed Skua sitting on my head.

When I went in 1999 for the first time to Spitsbergen, I had no way of knowing that I would get addicted to the area. Now its 2008 and I’ve been back every summer, except for the summer of 2006. The first three seasons and the one of 2006 I went as a Barnacle Goose researcher, the other summers as a guide for Oceanwide Expeditions. Most of the research I did in Ny Ålesund, Kongsfjord. In this area I learned quite a lot about the different birds, mammals, plants and the ecology of the area. Kongsfjorden is a great area and it was really nice to see the area up close in different years. In 2001 I was asked to become a guide on an expedition cruise ship around the archipelago. This gave me the opportunity to use my knowledge and share my enthusiasm for the area with others. And I could explore the other parts of the islands and see the remote east. After this year I returned almost every year as a tour guide.

On this website I try to give information about the area, what you can do there, what you can see or find.

If you have any questions, feel free to sent me an e-mail

    Hallo Arjen,

      Groeten, Arjen
